January 26th, 2004Ok, today I had some minutes for grmling. I made some details for design-goals of grml and requirements for it. Currently our biggest problem is which installation-system we should use, Anaconda is at least our favourite.

Organization of Grazer LinuxTage 2004 (GLT04) is going very well, a lot of lectures (currently more than 20!) and workshops (currently about 8) will be held. Today is meeting of the people organizating this event. GLT04 will take place on FH-Joanneum in Graz on 7th and 8th May, I have to quite a lot of work – especially for my lectures and workshops (www.linuxtage.at/prokop/).
Well, yesterday I took some minutes to change my setup from Cisco-VPN-Client to PPTP – on Laptop and on my Server (both running under 2.6.1-mm2). What should I say? Works great :-) Running about two to five times as fast as the cisco-vpn-connection (due to that most people of the about 3000 people in the network are using the suck^Wcisco-vpn-connection, reading NNTP makes much more fun ;-). In the next few days I will try to set up masquerading (for playing gateway) to bring my QNX-machine online.
Kevin Krammer sent me an URL about a great article about K Desktop Environment 3.2 (german only, sorry).
Yepp, I know I did not keep my blog up2date in the last day – sorry but had (and still have) to to a lot of stuff. First of all a lot to do at work (different stuff), organization for Grazer LinuxTage 2004 and university also requests some time ;)
eclipse – very nice piece of software! Nice tab-completion, great refactoring and so on. I just installed the latest-build (version 3.x) and it works fine, but you definitely need a fast computer ;-) BTW: turn of the year was funny for me (I was visiting familiy of my girlfriend) – but tomorrow I am going back to Graz for studying, working and doing some stuff for my different projects.
Update (21.01.2004): the gtk-stuff sucks – a known bug prevents you from creating new projects within eclipse, I had no chance to get around this bug (even not with current mm-versions of eclipse) so I tried the motif-version but this one sucks graphically ;o(.
Our cat Rubeo was desexed today ;) He is sleeping all day long :)
Jepp – 2.6.0 stable is available. I installed it on my laptop, seems to work at least as fine as 2.6.0-test11 ;) – I will check out some more details (special-keys, cdrom-burning,…) in my christmas-holidays.
The OpenSource-Lab @ TU Graz where I am going to work (maybe) is mentioned in Webstandard (german only – sorry).
My grandmother died on the 10th of december :(( On the 13th is funeral in Klagenfurt so I am driving to my hometown for one day together with my girfgriend (our cat Rubeo has to stay alone for some hours).
I activated linux-2.6.0-test11 on my laptop. It runs quite fast and stable, together with cpudyn Power-Management works much better than with 2.4-kernels.
Argl – Debian project machines been compromised. I really like Debian (at least it sucks less than other distributions) but the reaction of debian’s members sucks that much. Only a small notice on bottom of their main webpage, only some generell information on some debian-mailinglists and so on… Argl!
Ok, BA/CA sucks that much (check out old rant ;)) – I desided to create an account at P.S.K..
I am running QNX at work. I wanted to install QNX at home, so let’s set up a gateway. Anytime I have traffic on eth1 at the gateway the kernel freezes – grml. No network on the old computer, a fast try running QNX inside VMWare was not successfull (ok, I found another QNX-ISO designed for VMWare I could try once) I delete my /data on the laptop (backup via ssh on server) and want to install QNX on /dev/hda1 on my laptop. Booting QNX…. argl – doesn’t work. Ok, try some other bootparameters – ok, no chance to get QNX working with networking :(
Because I am going to set up 2.6.0-test9 on my server I could change from cisco-vpn to PPTP – maybe I can activate the gateway then for running QNX behind.
Thomas Winkler found out that there exists a cisco-vpn-client which should work with linux 2.6.0-kernels. I test it on my laptop and – it works! So I also activate the 2.6.0-test9 also on my workstation/server – but my mouse doesn’t work then as it should – damn!
$ uname -a Linux tweety 2.6.0-test9 #3 Sun Nov 23 14:55:21 CET 2003 i686 GNU/Linux
Our cat Rubeo had something like an epileptic, algospasm attack. Some more details are available on my Rubeo-Webpage (german only, sorry).
Argl, on my account statement are some charges of 11 cents for “fremde PSK-Gebühr” (my girlfriend transfered money to my account). I went to BA/CA a week ago and tried to get more details about the fee of 11 cents. The chief promised me to call me if she has some more details about it…. Of course nobody called me… so I went to the bank again… langer rede kurzer sinn, as we german-speaking say: Bankaustria/Creditanstalt sucks.
Update: Martin Brugger sent me a link to a short article from konsument.at (german only).
And I wanted to check my account via online-banking, for the german-speaking people check out (summary: online-banking did’nt work):

Argl, I have tried several kernels and settings with hdparm because my computer could not drive at any mode faster than udma2. Accessing the more detailed BIOS-Settings via Ctrl+F1 (Gigabyte 8KNXP-Board) and setting modes manually (not cable-select) fixed the problem. grml….
grml:/home/mika# hdparm -i /dev/hda /dev/hdb /dev/hdc /dev/hdd | grep udma UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5 udma6 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5 grml:/home/mika#
Marianne and me took our cat called Rubeo to the veterinarian. I was afraid of some troubles with Rubeo but he didn’t cause any disasters ;) Rubeo has fleas and tapeworms and so he got some medicine. More details on Rubeo are available online: www.michael-prokop.at/rubeo/ (only in german – sorry).
Win2k3 sucks that much (ok, I don’t tell news), but at least netcraft’s web-server-survey shows that not all people are stupid enough to use IIS as a webserver.
