Current status…

Since Wednesday 16:00 I’m at holidays 8-). No work, no university – at least not official ;-). Now I’m listening to Nils Landgren’s Funk Unit at Jazz Baltica on tv (3sat).

Today I met Sven Guckes at Kunsthaus in Graz. Sven is in Graz for the next three months. Together with Sven I’m writing a book on texttools. The LaTeX-framework already exists and the subversion-repository is working fine [At revision 17.].

Sven gave me some posters from FFII and for LinuxTag 2005 in Karlsruhe. And Sven – you’re absolutely great! Sven brought me Linux DVD 2004 from LinuxTag 2004. Now I’m browsing through the documentation-dvd, thanks – Sven!

hey, tell us more about it! a book about texttools? please adjust your debugging level (-vv should be enough for the first try)

Well, where should I start 8-). A first version of index of contents has been created. Sven is in Graz and currently doesn’t have that much time so I’m the only one writing on the book at the time ;-). I’m especially working on the chapter about shells. I finished a main chapter about shells and now I’m writing on the sections “bash” and “zsh” which we’ll describe in more detail.

Other chapters will be screen, mailreader, editors, newsreader, icq- and irc-clients, rss-readers, browser and texttools like as grep, awk, sed and less/more/most, tr, boxes, uniq and so on.

We would like to be quite verbose enough on those tools but as far as we can see mutt and vim won’t be covered in such detail because there already exist books on vim and mutt should get it’s own book [writen by us ;-)]. I don’t want to promise anything more in detail because some things are “quite heavy” and our book should be useful for beginners in texttools but also be helpful for people who want to improve their knowledge on texttools. Quite difficult to write such a book with less than 1500 pages ;-).

Feedback – what would you like to read in the book, what would be useful,… – is welcome of course!

For information on Sven’s summer 2004 have a look at: http://www.guckes.net/freesummer/

A LUGG-meeting would be nice, I’m back to Graz during IPICS04 – that’s beetween 19th and 30th of july. And I’d bring Sven with me ;-)
