Argl, I have tried several kernels and settings with hdparm because my computer could not drive at any mode faster than udma2. Accessing the more detailed BIOS-Settings via Ctrl+F1 (Gigabyte 8KNXP-Board) and setting modes manually (not cable-select) fixed the problem. grml….

grml:/home/mika# hdparm -i /dev/hda /dev/hdb /dev/hdc /dev/hdd | grep udma
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5 udma6
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
